Uhh...are you sure?One more funny thing from The Junkers show on Saturday night, overheard from two women at the bar:
WOMAN #1: "Do you know why they don't play anymore?"
WOMAN #2: "Yeah, it's because the lead singer [Kenneth Burns] moved to New York to start a solo career."
So, Kennyboy, how is that solo career going?
On the box right now: Various Artists, DAVE GODIN'S DEEP SOUL TREASURES, VOL. 1 . Godin (who recently passed away) was a famed English record collector and reviewer, and his four volumes of unearthed gems (many of them really obscure) are as good a legacy as anyone could hope for. There's a track on here, "Showdown" by Kenny Carter, that's in danger of becoming my next favorite song in the world.

May the Force...oh, whateverI've heard it's fantastic, but I really have no interest whatsoever in seeing the final STAR WARS film that's released tomorrow. I think the previous two films - which I found plodding, stilted and totally uniteresting - have just about done their job in numbing me to any excitement I may have previously felt over Lucas' "saga." Like most everybody I've met, I'm a fan of the original three films, and there was a period (around the time of the 1997 theatre reissues of the trilogy) where I was definitely grazing near the grass of geekdom.
Still, maybe because of the first two episodes, and almost assuredly because I'm a different dude than I used to be, I really don't feel much interest in rushing out to see Episode III, even if - as every review I've read has suggested - it might be the best film of the 6. I'm sure I'll see it eventually, maybe even in the theatre, but there's no way that my lightsaber will be unsheathed in anything like haste to try to get close to this one right away.
Am I just a jaded cynic, or dilletante-ish semi-fan? Or is this indicative of the far different position that STAR WARS holds in our culture at the moment?

MemoriesLast night's Junkers reunion was too much fun. It was a great show, both from The Junkers and Pupy Costello & His Big City Honky Tonk, and the chance to reconnect with a sizable group of old friends, many of whom I haven't talked to in a long time (and some of whom I had no expectation of running into) was really wonderful. There was one point late in the show, in fact, when I looked to my left and realized that I was standing at the end of a line with four of the people I've known longest in Madison; two of them were basically the first people I met when I got here in 1999. Being there with old (and new) friends, listening to our favorite Madison band tear it up once again, I'll admit that this ol' cowboy got a little misty.
So big ups to The Junkers and Pupy Costello & His Big City Honky Tonk, plus special guest "Slow-Rollin" Joe Nosek, for proving once again that Madison is home to some unbelievably talented musicians. The fact that they're really good people is merely a bonus.
On the box right now: Dwight Yoakam, BLAME THE VAIN. What's this album, you say? Why, it's the Dwight album due out at the end of June. Before you think that I've got another hook-up (like with the Robbie Fulks), all I did was pre-order it from Amazon.com, which allowed me access to a digital stream of the album from now until the release date. On first listen, it's another winner. How many great records does Dwight have to make before he's considered one of the best in the world, in any genre?
