Johnny Cash's absolutely brilliant video "Hurt" got stiffed on the VMAs tonight. Maybe not a real surprise, but a sad disappointment. It's the best video I've ever seen, and I mean it. No hyperbole. Oh well...at least Coldplay, Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg gave The Man In Black his props. Seriously, though, the video's brilliant. Check it out if you haven't seen it. (It's currently available as a bonus DVD on Cash's latest album, THE MAN COMES AROUND. But it NOW, both for the video and the album.)
Speaking of props, let me just say this: Warren Zevon's
new, and likely final, album THE WIND is unbelievable. Emotional, honest, memorable, compelling...every adjective I can foist upon it, and much much more. The guests are great (Springsteen, Petty, Yoakam, Emmylou, Cooder, Keltner, Lindley, Browne etc.) and Zevon himself has written and performed a great bunch of songs. I actually found myself tearing up a couple times, namely at "Please Stay" and "Keep Me In Your Heart." Can't wait to think what'll happen when WZ actually leaves us. I might have to shut the door, grab my guitar, and play Zevon songs all night long. I did that when I heard about his diagnosis, and it very well could happen again.
I'm tired of seeing fucking idiots try to discuss politics without knowing what the fuck they're talking about. I know that's an elitist statement, but it's just the simple truth. I would much rather deal with a smart and informed conservative (even though, as smart as informed as they may be, they're still WRONG) than a complete numbnuts who resorts to smart-ass, smirking commentary or hackneyed cliche when pressed on an issue. This is true, of course, both on the right and on the left. I feel I have the right, as a die-hard and devoted Lefty, to say that the Left is mostly comprised of idiots who have no idea how to communicate with anybody outside of the goddamn teach-ins they do every two months. DON'T YOU THINK REGULAR PEOPLE SHOULD HEAR THIS SHIT??? Ugh. If there's ONE REASON the Left has so little stroke in this country, it's because of the FUCKING PEOPLE ON THE LEFT. Sorry if I'm pissed off, but I'm sick of seeing complete morons in charge because we on the progressive side of things can't get our collective shit together.
Anyway, that's all the news that's fit to print today. I'm going back to Madison Sunday, and my blogging'll probably get more regular from there. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.

The Zevon special I mentioned before was fabulous...check it out when it repeats. Can't wait to hear the album, which comes out tomorrow.
Interviewed Ronnie McCoury today. The mandolin player from The Del McCoury Band, Ronnie possesses one of the great tenor voices, and some of the best mandolin skills, of anyone in bluegrass (or any genre), so it was nice to talk with him.
That's about it for today.
On the box right now: Howard Tate, REDISCOVERED
