Shot Of Rhythm

Today, along with a sensational new Grandpaboy release and a typically superior new Van Morrison album, the final collection from Joe Strummer comes out. STREETCORE, it's called, and I'm listening to it right now. Two tracks in, I'm already remembering why I miss him so much.

Along with Pete Townshend and Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer reminds us that rock and roll can and should be about something big, a means not only through which you can have a good time, but also a tool to understand and improve your condition and that of the rest of the world. Not in a "POWER OF ROCK!!!" kind of way (the kind so accurately spoofed by Jack Black in SCHOOL OF ROCK), but in a near-gospel, near-revolutionary manner. This is the kind of rock and roll that helps you live better. His solo work was more subtle and exploratory, but he never lost sight of the promise. This last album seems a perfect capper to an extraordinary and important career. Thanks, Joe.

On the box right now: Joe Strummer, STREETCORE.

(PS-The Grandpaboy album is really fantastic. Don't be afraid of it; it won't bite.)

Peace...

We've got a new addition to the blogosphere: John has joined the merrymaking. Hip hip...

By the way, I forgot to tell y'all about how I managed Saturday night to get seated next to the biggest bunch of meathead, cracker-ass, homophobic, racist, sexist frat people that I've encountered in a long time, maybe ever. It was on the Terrace, at the free hip-hop show, and they were just about as offensive as you can get without being subject to legal action (or an asskicking). My two favorites were their repeated use of the phrase "faggot-ass nigga" (these were white guys), and one's assertion that "there's probably gonna be a ton of fights tonight with all these gang people here." Now, I looked around, and I didn't see all that many gang people. I did see a whole bunch of black folks, Latinos and others in hip-hop gear, however. Once again, proof that "gang people" is white code for "people who aren't white." Fuckers...

On the box right now: THE FACES, Good Boys...When They're Asleep.

Peace...

Sorry I haven't posted much this week...nothing to say, I guess. Life is progressing on as it should be, which is always a welcome occurrence, and everything else has either been too predictable or too inexplicable to mention. A couple things that have crossed my mind since last we spoke:

-Four more soldiers died in Iraq this week, lifting the total of American casualties since George W. Bush got on that aircraft carrier and declared major combat over to just north of 100. When exactly are people going to stop taking this shit? I think the hour grows closer and closer, nearer and nearer...

-Remember the "Funny Kid?" He's getting worse. Apparently spurred on by what he percieves as approval and appreciation for his stupidity (which I, a more experienced goof-off, realize as more of the half-smile tolerance of people who are too cool and/or too nice to really let the dork have it), has progressed from 5 or 6 remarks a class period to a near-constant stream of cocky, idiotic bullshit. In other words, the "Funny Kid" is quickly approaching new status, the "Slapped Kid." I just hope it ain't me who has to do it.

-Marlins up 1 game in the World Series, hopefully we can take Game 2 tonight. Go fish!

On the box right now: Willie Nelson, GREATEST HITS (AND SOME THAT WILL BE)

Peace...
