Three more for the jukebox

BR5-49-"No Friend Of Mine"
N.E.R.D.-"Drill Seargant"
Jay Farrar-"Doesn't Have To Be This Way"

On the box right now: Uncle Tupelo, MARCH 16-20, 1992. Speaking of His Sulkiness, Jay Farrar's vocal on "Moonshiner" justifies his existence for now and evermore. (Of course, even it that didn't, his songs "Still Be Around" and "Windfall," or the scorching Son Volt performance on the new Escovedo tribute, would, but you get my point.)

More words from our President

---NEWSWEEK reports that President Bush, appearing before a right-to-life rally in Tampa, Florida on June 17, stated: "We must always remember that all human beings begin life as a feces. A feces is a living being in the eyes of God, who has endowed that feces with all of the rights and God-given blessings of any other human being." The audience listened in disbelief as the President repeated his error at least a dozen times, before realizing that he had used the word "feces" when he meant to say"fetus."---

I know I've said this before, and I'm sure you know where I stand on this, but can't we do better than this? I think I'm gonna puke...

On the box right now: Talking Heads, NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS: DELUXE REISSUE, Disc 1. (I guess I'll have to pause it to go puke, though...)

Peace...

Mississippi blues on your ass

Remember this name...Slick Ballinger. If you see, or hear, anything about Slick coming anywhere near you, or releasing a record, or whatever, make every effort to check him out. I hate terms like "future of the blues," "next big thing," and such hype and jive, but - after the two performances I've witnessed and the demo I've heard - this guy really might be it. As long as his aim is true, and I have no doubt to believe that it is.

Similarly, you wanna - no, you've gotta - go out and buy all three records by James Mathus and his Knockdown Society. (http://www.jamesmathus.com) and Super Chikan (don't know a URL, sorry...look it up your damned selves). Anyone who thinks that blues is either boring or antiquated will be converted.

On the box right now: The Burnside Exploration, BURNSIDE EXPLORATION. The children of R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough play a surprisingly diverse set of rhythm and blues. Sweet stuff.

Peace...
