Five stars

I saw MILLION DOLLAR BABY tonight. Wow. This is a mighty powerful piece of filmmaking, with great acting (from Eastwood, Swank and Freeman) and a story that will truly knock you over. Everyone should see it, and make sure you see it before anybody gives away the big plot twist that takes the film from being a pseudo-ROCKY boxing story into a drama of intense emotion. It's not a feel-good story, but - like all of Eastwood's best films - it is a wonderfully moral story of human strength and frailty. Wow...

I'd love to hear the thoughts of anyone who's seen it, but - if you comment on it - make sure not to give away the plot twists.

On the box right now: Neil Young, PIANO. One of five mix discs that I made of the great Mr. Young.

Peace...

Makes me wanna holler

Spent some time last night with a couple veterans of the Iraq War, a sister and brother who both did a year tour. Both the sister, who's my age, and her brother, who's a couple years older, reminded me so much of people I went to high school with. Which makes sense, since there are veterans of this war around us everywhere, whether or not we recognize it.

Anyway, they told me some stuff that absolutely blew my fuckin' mind, both in the context of a public presentation and then later at a smaller conversation around a table at a bar. Some of the information they shared (particularly at the bar) was so explosive, so unbelievably gutwrenching, that I honestly don't feel comfortable sharing it here, both out of respect for them and out of my not insignificant concern that they are at risk for telling their stories. (The biggest reason for this, of course, is that - for one of them at least - their tenure in the guard isn't over, and they'll be returning to Iraq, probably in the next year.) They both want to tell their story, and I hope they'll have the ability to, but it ain't my place to out them or what they told me, even in this context.

Suffice to say that it was an incredibly powerful experience, one that reaffirmed to me how horrible this entire mess is, and how badly its being mishandled by the buffoons in the White House. Even though I was 100% against the war from the beginning, I had hoped that the situation in Iraq would be better than the two veterans painted it to be. We're talking deep wounds, folks...deep fuckin' wounds. I hope that as a nation, left-wing to right-wing, we figure out a way to heal them before they fester. Goddamnit...

On the box right now: Dorothy Love Coates, CRAIG WERNER'S MIX. He's been on fire with mixes lately...

Things I said today

"Remember what Malcolm X said: never trust a plastic mouse."

"Oh great, combining two of my least favorite things: projected self-evaluation and math."

"I don't want to be a princess, but I would love to be Prince."

"I got my goddamn pages read, motherfucker."

On the box right now: Drive-By Truckers, GANGSTABILLY. All hail the Truckers (more and more my favorite contemporary rock band), and New West Records (www.newwestrecords.com), for reissuing DBT's first two records with remastering and insightul new liner notes.

Peace...
