Black history month
Since Black History Month began, I learned the following things:
-According to a study, over 3/4 of American high-school students "don't really care" about the First Amendment, and over half feel that its protections "go too far."
-Ossie Davis died. Mr. Davis was one of the great figures in black theatre/film and - along with his wife, the equally brilliant Ruby Dee - he was a major contributor to the modern "Black Arts Movement." His astounding career was in some way capped by Spike Lee's casting of him (alongside Dee) in DO THE RIGHT THING and JUNGLE FEVER.
-While meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus, President Bush claimed that he was "unfamiliar" with the Voting Rights Act, the monumental 1965 law that came directly from the work of civil rights movement activists in Selma, Alabama, and throughout the nation more generally. Certain provisions of the act come up for renewal this year, and - while they will most likely be renewed - the fact that Bush claimed ignorance when asked about the law speaks to that dangerous cocktail of stupidity/indifference that has come to characterize his administration.
So, in other words, we're off to a helluva start...

Five more stars
I saw SIDEWAYS earlier tonight. Two astonishing film experiences in one week (along with MILLION DOLLAR BABY last Friday)...that ain't bad. I don't know whether or not I liked MILLION DOLLAR BABY or SIDEWAYS more, but I can say that both are excellent, and I came to a certain realization during SIDEWAYS' credits: the two films are so much better
than any other film I saw this year. I mean, there's no competition. SIDEWAYS/MILLION DOLLAR BABY throw the entire curve...
On the box right now: Various Artists, FROM OUD TO OZOMATLI. A great mix of Latin music - from the Moors to barrio hip-hop - made by a wonderful music journalist, who hopefully will turn this concept into a larger piece, of one form or (hopefully) more than one.

Quote of the week
"Why do I get the feeling that my life is like a perennial birthday party for someone else?"-Lars Ulrich
On the box right now: The Pogues, IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD. The great band's albums have all been reissued in Europe, with bonus tracks, remastering, new liner notes et cetera. They're worth seeking out. Erin go bragh.
