Now hear this

Tune into "Higher Ground w/Jonathan Overby" this Saturday night to hear me play some music live on the radio. See here:

On the box right now: Red Devils, WHITE-ASS JOE'S MIX. Damn good stuff from an L.A. blues band, compiled by our friend Joe Nosek from the Cash Box Kings.

My new favorite person

Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a slain Iraq War soldier (Casey Sheehan) and founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, who is holding a vigil outside Bush's vacation ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Keep posted:

Gold Star Families For Peace:

On the box right now: Proclaimers, RESTLESS SOUL. Got an advance copy of this for review, and I'm very impressed with it. There's a song on here called "DIY," that is one of the harsher critiques of pro-war people I've heard in a while. "Warmongers, kill yourselves/Demonstrate the power of the product you're trying to sell." Not bad...

Saw Bruce Springsteen last night. Unbelievable, masterful, exquisite. It was a solo performance, but it was anything but boring. He pulled out some songs he plays very rarely (like "Frankie," which he's performed three times in 26 years), did a lot of wonderful piano-and-organ-based stuff, sang with a power and intensity that I've never heard from him before (lots of bluesy falsetto), and closed with - of all things - a cover of Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream," which he turned into a bizarrely effective kind of hypnotic gospel. Really fantastic. (He also played a couple songs on a beautiful Gretsch arch-top guitar, which I've never seen him play before and wish he'd play more often.) Five stars.

On the box right now: Various Artists, SOUTHERN SOUL SHOWCASE: CRYIN' IN THE STREETS.
