Words of wisdom
After a few entries that were, for various reasons, rather serious, I figure that it's a perfect time - especially since we may have gained new readers in the past month or so - for something meaningless and stupid. And, when that's called for, nothing fits the bill like a few out-of-context things that I've actually said over the past couple days:
-"Wilson Pickett kept bugging me to call him Ishmael."
-"What would Potsie say? Actually, what did
-"This, ladies and gentlemen, is white people at their absolute weirdest."
-"I stole the skates...signed, 'The Phantom.'"
There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Another step in my burgeoning career as a public intellectual...

Death don't do no favors, death don't make no deals
Helluva way to start the week...
I woke up today to find an e-mail in my box saying that, after a long battle with cancer, Prof. Nellie McKay died yesterday. Dr. McKay was the heart and soul (and a whole lot of the brains) of the UW Afro-American Studies Department, and - while her slow decline had been at times unbearably painful to witness - finally losing her is still a major blow, to our world and our spirits. It's an end of a really great era, actually.
I had a couple classes with her, and she was always wonderfully smart and supportive. Even though she was primarily a lit person and I mainly history, we certainly found the places where our interestes and knowledge intersected in interesting ways. In general, hanging around the department as an undergrad and grad student was always made better by her presence, humor and strength.
I'd try to list her more general accomplishments, but I wouldn't do that good of a job of it (since they were many). So, here's a link to her profile on our department's website: http://polyglot.lss.wisc.edu/aas/mckay.html
Here's hoping that her spirit visits us every once a while. Let's try to be good to ourselves...
On the box right now: Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers, COMPLETE, Disc 1. I actually put this on to prepare for class this week, but it couldn't be more appropriate.
